Recent Earthquakes in Nepal

It appears that every time we turn on a news broadcast another natural or man-made disaster is occurring. It’s all rather overwhelming and after some time we tend to forget and go on to the next news story…in the old days it was a newspaper which became the fish & chip wrapping.

Children Account For Half Of Dead And Injured In Nepal Earthquake – UNICEF

Some of you may not have heard but on late Friday evening, 3rd November 2023 a magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck remote parts of western Nepal. According to local authorities, the quake has claimed 153 lives and injured more than 338 people. Almost half of those reported killed and injured were children as the earthquake took place while people were sleeping.

An estimated 200,000 people, including over 80,000 children are affected in the Jajarkot and Rukum West districts. In addition, further aftershocks up to magnitude-5.8 continue to affect the areas with many living in constant fear. According to UNICEF, most of the homes in the area are damaged, along with schools, health centres and other infrastructure.

The earthquake has occurred in one of the high poverty regions of Nepal, making families even more vulnerable and exposed to cold weather. One of our members Aditya Raut has organised a partnership with Red Cross Nepal and we are needing your donation to supply warm clothing and blankets to women and children in the affected areas. No amount is too small and any donation over $2.00 is tax deductible.

We know everyone is doing it tough at the moment and we understand if you cannot help us get vital supplies. You can still support by sharing this story with the possibility someone else can make it happen!

For any information, Aditya can be contacted via his email aditya@umbrellaaustralia.org
